Dynamics of reactive distillation processes with potential liquid phase splitting based on equilibrium stage models

چکیده
A dynamic reactive distillation (RD) column model is developed for highly nonideal systems with potential phase splitting. Dynamic simulations and nonlinear dynamic analysis are performed for recovery of acetic acid from waste waters by esterification with n-butanol, which is an interesting alternative to nonreactive separation processes. Two alternative RD column designs were tested with respect to their open loop transient responses to process disturbances. One parameter continuation with eigenvalue calculations reveals existence of multiple steady states with stable and unstable branches. These steady states were found to have totally different phase splitting behavior of the original liquid phase inside the column. Conclusions are drawn for process operation.

Dynamic Simulation of Reactive Distillation Processes with Liquid-liquid Phase Splitting
This paper presents a modern modeling approach for reactive distillation processes with potential phase splitting. It is based on a classical model (pseudo-homogeneous) in connection with a robust and reliable phase splitting algorithm (through homotopy-continuation method), performed at each simulation step. Model validation stage and a simple case-study (by applying the new approach to a reac...
متن کاملA Systematic Approach on the Dynamic Modeling of Reactive Distillation Processes The standard mathematical model (NPHSP)
This work addresses the major problem of reactive distillation (RD) processes mathematical modeling, revealing also why detecting the presence of a three-phase regime (vapour-liquid-liquid) on the column stages is of utmost importance. In this paper, the authors present in detail their starting modeling approach, which describes the behaviour of a “classic” RD process (where the potential liqui...
متن کاملA Systematic Approach on the Dynamic Modelling of Reactive Distillation Processes with Potential Liquid Phase Splitting. Building-up the improved PHSP simulation model. II
As shown in the first part of our work [1], this paper deals with the presence of a three-phase regime (vapour-liquid-liquid) on the reactive distillation (RD) column stages due to a liquid liquid phase splitting (PHSP) between aqueous and organic phases. Special attention has to be paid on this subject, because detecting the three phase regime can lead to different operating and design strateg...
متن کاملTheory and Application of Nonlinear Wave Propagation Phenomena in Combined Reaction / Separation Processes
In the chemical industry the demands regarding process efficiency are permanently increasing. At the same time methods to design indiviual process stages and interconnect them to higly integrated process are reaching their preformance limit. To overcome these limitations the focus of current research has turned to combined processes, i.e. processes that combine the tasks of different process st...
متن کاملSimulation of Reactive Distillation: Comparison of Equilibrium and Nonequilibrium Stage Models
In the present study, two distinctly different approaches are followed for modeling of reactive distillation column, the equilibrium stage model and the nonequilibrium stage model. These models are simulated with a computer code developed in the present study using MATLAB programming. In the equilibrium stage models, the vapor and liquid phases are assumed to be in equilibrium and allowance is ...
